Hyundai is once again turning up the heat on one of the industry’s hottest cars, adding an R-Spec package to the potent Genesis Coupe 3.8. The R-Spec cuts to the chase by bringing drivers enough “go fast” goodies to make sure it’s the Coupe’s rivals that are left doing the chasing.
Like all Genesis Coupes, the 3.8 R-Spec is built on a purpose-built rear-wheel-drive platform designed specifically for performance applications. Next comes the “3.8” part of the package, an advanced 3.8-liter V6 with variable valve timing and a new variable intake, good for 306 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. Then, upping the ante even further, engineers drop in a full range of no-frills, all-thrills R-Spec upgrades.
These include a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission, 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in hi-po Bridgestone rubber, a limited-slip differential, bolstered seats, and significant enhancements to the Coupe’s braking and suspension systems. Providing the stopping power is a full setup from Brembo, including 13.4-inch ventilated rotors up front and 13-inchers at the rear, along with four-piston calipers at all four corners. The track-tuned handling package offers a MacPherson strut, dual-link front setup and a five-link independent rear suspension, reconfigured with higher-rate coil spring, higher-control shocks, thicker front and rear stabilizers, and a front strut brace.
With the Coupe 3.8 R-Spec in the automaker’s stable for 2011, the lineup for the new model year will include the Coupe 2.0T, Coupe 2.0T Premium and Coupe 2.0T R-Spec, all leveraging Hyundai’s responsive 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 powerplant, along with the Coupe 3.8 Grand Touring and 3.8 Track.
Also debuting for 2011 on all Coupes are a wide range of interior refinements. Among them: new soft-touch surfaces, metalgrain and chrome accents, padded door armrests, rear coat hooks, a trunk deck-lid grab handle, and better display-screen graphics. With all these improvements and more, including softer leather for the car’s steering wheel, the 2011 Genesis Coupe will be harder to resist than ever later this year, when it hits Pohanka Hyundai Manassas. Used Hyundai models are a great value.
