If you’re fond of driving (and putting, too), a visit to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama is a little slice of paradise here on earth, encompassing 11 sites and nearly 470 holes of championship-caliber play. And it turns out that if you’re fond of that other kind of driving—the kind that involves four wheels—the trip can be just as heavenly. Especially if you’ve got the keys to a Hyundai Genesis in your golf bag.

That’s something the editors at Car and Driver found out recently when they took to the Jones trail to see how the Genesis 3.8 stacks up against three key rivals—the Ford Taurus Limited, Buick LaCrosse CXS and Lexus ES350—in a comparison of V6 sedans priced under $40,000. Unfortunately for that trio, however, it wasn’t much of a comparison.

From the very first tee, as the magazine’s scribes note, “only one car, the Genesis, rides atop a platform conceived specifically for it—that is, for a luxury sedan rather than for a whole clan of variously badged family sedans.”

The Hyundai also got kudos for its all-around performance, besting the other sedans in lateral grip, responsiveness, brake feel, stopping distance and both 0-60 and quarter-mile times. Further, while giving a well-earned shout-out to the V8-powered Genesis in their long-term fleet, Car and Driver editors came away ready to recommend the V6 model being tested here for its ability to put up an EPA line of 18 mpg city/27 mpg highway/21 mpg combined.

Also notable: The rear seats of the Genesis were just as comfortable as those in the bigger Taurus, courtesy of the Hyundai’s longer wheel base, and the Genesis also matched the Lexus in terms of in-cabin ergonomics. As the Car and Driver story points out, there’s another advantage, too: The Genesis continues its automaker’s long tradition of “shaming the competition with more features and amenities at no extra cost.”

In other words, if you really want to drive in style today—whether it’s on the fairway or on the highway—be sure to swing by your local Hyundai dealership to check out the Hyundai Genesis 3.8 first.

FIRSTS FOR HYUNDAI AND CONSUMERS
As Hyundai’s flagship rear-wheel-drive sedan, Equus contains many Hyundai firsts. One innovative new technology is the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system, which governs ESC, the electronic parking brake, smart cruise control, the collision warning sensor and the seatbelt tensioning system for optimal safety. The seatbelt tensioning system works through sensors, which detect critical driving situations and retract the seatbelts accordingly to prevent passenger movement. The Equus’ dynamic safety package is further enhanced by the Lane Departure Warning System and driver’s knee airbags.

Beyond safety, the Equus will also debut power rear side-window sunshades, a heated steering wheel, power trunk lid, dual power, heated and cooled front seats, rain-repelling front side windows, a thermoelectric rear console refrigerator, 60/40 split power reclining rear seats and electronically-controlled Air Suspension with dual-mode Continuous Damping Control.

Several new driver information technologies make their debut on the Equus. Driver and passengers can keep an eye on the Equus’ numerous electronic systems through the 3.5-inch TFT LCD vehicle information monitor. Equus also features a forward-view cornering camera and a parking guide system with both top view and rear view perspectives.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES
Hyundai’s Tau V8, which has been rated one of Ward’s “Ten Best Engines” for two consecutive years, is a strong technological building block for Equus. It is joined by an unsurpassed standard feature list including Smart Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning System, a heated steering wheel, power reclining rear seats, heated rear seats and a 608-watt Lexicon 7.1 Discrete surround sound audio system with 17 speakers. Equus Ultimate adds first-class rear seating and other focused rear compartment features that can only found on low-volume special-order competitive models.

EQUUS COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES
Tau V8 engine, rated one of Ward’s “Ten Best Engines” for 2009 and 2010
First-class seating available on Equus Ultimate (competitors’ best seating options come only on the long-wheelbase variants)

Standard Smart Cruise Control

Standard Lane Departure Warning System

Standard heated steering wheel

Standard power reclining rear seats

EXTERIOR FEATURE AND PLATFORM TECHNOLOGY COMPARISON
Compared to its primary competitors, the Lexus LS460, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series and Audi A8, the Equus delivers a remarkable advantage in technology and feature content. Air suspension, 19-inch wheels, a collision warning system, nine airbags including rear seat-mounted side-impact airbags, a Lane Departure Warning System, Smart Cruise Control, HID headlights, AFLS, front and rear parking sensors, a rear backup camera and a proximity key with push-button start come standard on Equus Signature and Equus Ultimate.

INTERIOR FEATURE COMPARISON
Equus delivers an extraordinary package of interior technologies and features including an Alcantara suede headliner, heated and cooled front seats, heated steering wheel, memory system, electronic parking brake, auto vehicle hold, navigation system, iPod connection, dual fully automatic temperature control, sunroof, power rear side-window shades, driver-seat massage, power reclining rear seats (60/40), heated rear seats and a power rear sunshade.

Of special appeal to audiophiles is the Equus’ standard, industry-leading 608-watt audio unit, the Lexicon® 7.1 Discrete surround sound audio system featuring 17 speakers.

EQUUS ULTIMATE ADDS ULTRA LUXURY FEATURES

Equus Ultimate adds or replaces:

50/50 split rear seats (four-passenger seating) with reclining function

Cooled rear seats

Rear-seat entertainment system w/ eight-inch monitor

Thermoelectric rear center console refrigerator

Rear-seat power up/down head restraints w/ manual tilt

Rear-seat illuminated vanity mirrors

Forward-view cornering camera

Power trunk lid

The Equus Ultimate takes the luxury mandate of the Equus Signature and enhances it with a package of high-end amenities new to this price class. In the rear, the power-adjustable right-side seat provides passengers a generous 84 degrees of leg support, with the capability to move the front passenger seat forward and out of the way for full leg extension.

The Equus Ultimate replaces the 60:40 rear seat of the Equus Signature with a 50:50 power reclining seating configuration.

The seat-back of this 50:50 seat massages and vibrates with heat — the perfect relaxation therapy for extended cruising. It is operated by its own remote control unit.

Ample, first-class-style headrests also contain wings that can be adjusted for perfect comfort and support, ideal for napping or mere relaxation.
The rear seat experience in the Equus Ultimate is further upgraded by an eight-inch LCD screen.

This individual entertainment system will play DVDs for rear-seat passengers, as well as demonstrate audio features and report on HVAC status. The rear multimedia monitor can be controlled from the rear console, which also houses the remote control seat massage function.

These controls also activate the heated and cooled rear seats and the rear console refrigerator.

Other Equus Ultimate features include rear-seat power up/down head restraints with manual tilt, rear-seat illuminated vanity mirrors, a forward-view cornering camera to help drivers navigate around tight corners and a power trunk lid.

THE HEART OF HYUNDAI’S FLAGSHIP – SOPHISTICATED POWERTRAIN AND CHASSIS TECHNOLOGIES
The Equus is powered by Hyundai’s two-consecutive-year award-winning 4.6-Liter DOHC Tau V8 engine, mated to a ZF® six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC®. The overall driving experience is enhanced by Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering (EHPS) and an electronically-controlled Air Suspension with Continuous Damping Control (CDC) and Smart Cruise Control. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and EBD. The Equus rides on 19-inch chrome alloy wheels with P245/45R19 (front) / P275/40R19 (rear) tires.

STANDARD SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Equus features standard ESC with TCS and Brake Assist. A new Hyundai safety innovation comes in the form of the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) with pre-collision warning. VSM ties all of the active and passive safety features together, making sure that they perform optimally and in conjunction with one another.

Other safety features include a total of nine standard airbags (advanced dual front airbags, front and rear seat-mounted side-impact airbags, driver knee airbag, and roof-mounted side-curtain airbags), electronic active front head restraints with power controls, electronic seatbelt pretensioners and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). In addition to these, a Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) makes its Hyundai debut on the Equus.

COLORS
Equus offers four exterior color choices and three interior theme choices. Exterior colors are White Satin Pearl, Black Noir Pearl, Granite Gray and Platinum Metallic. Interior themes are Cashmere with genuine Birch Burl wood, Jet Black with genuine walnut wood and Saddle with genuine walnut wood.

Hyundai vehicles are distributed throughout the United States by Hyundai Motor America and are sold and serviced through about 800 dealerships nationwide. All Hyundai vehicles sold in the U.S. are covered by the Hyundai Assurance program, which includes the 5-year/60,000-mile fully transferable new vehicle warranty, Hyundai’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and 5-years of complimentary Roadside Assistance.

The official details of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra have yet to be released, but the latest generation of the Avante, which is what the Elantra is based on, is already on sale in Korean and gives us a good idea of what to expect.

We’ve already taken a peek at some of the exterior shots of the latest Elantra/Avante, which shows similar lines to that of the 2011 Sonata, simply in a smaller package. But the “fluidic sculpture” design language can also be seen in the interior.

The dash of the Avante features loads of graceful curves and sharp angles, and the initial photos hint at fairly high-quality materials, especially considering this is a budget compact sedan.

Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe has received rave reviews for its surprising performance. Despite being an all-new model from a brand that’s not exactly known for creating sports cars, the Genesis Coupe has held its own against the likes the Ford Mustang and Nissan 370Z, just to name a couple. Now for 2011, Hyundai is upping the ante with a new R-Spec model that adds to the performance quotient.

The new R-Spec model improves upon the already stellar Genesis Coupe and its powerful 306 horsepower V6 engine. With new 19-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, stuffer suspension, and a limited slip differential the R-Spec model is for drivers that take performance very seriously.

“The interior upgrades, our hot new 3.8 R-Spec model, and revised lineup of six focused models show that Hyundai is meeting the demands of our customers,” said Scott Margason, director, product planning, Hyundai Motor America. “The upgraded interior is a great illustration of how Hyundai continually raises its own high benchmarks for quality.”

Inside, the R-Spec will even receive sportier seats with larger bolsters. Aside from that, all 2011 Genesis Coupe models will receive more soft-touch finishes, matte surfaces, and metallic accents. New models will also receive a leather steering wheel cover and cloth-wrapped A-pillars.

Despite record-breaking sales, driven by a string of high-quality vehicles, there are still customers for whom Hyundai products fly below the metaphorical radar. Take, for example, just two: the all-new 2011 Hyundai Sonata and the sophisticated 2010 Hyundai Genesis sedan. They might not have the same name recognition as some of their rivals, but they’re the perfect example of the kind of “choices that are just as worthy of your buying dollars, if not more so. They’re the dark horses,” according to the editors at Edmunds.com—the team that just officially named both cars to the website’s “Top 10 Best Dark-Horse Cars” of 2010.

Of the Genesis, Edmunds.com notes that it “delivers everything that luxury-car shoppers look for in a premium sedan.” And that includes something those buyers can look for all they want and not find anywhere else but the Genesis and the Rolls Royce Phantom: A Lexicon-branded audio system packing a 12-channel digital amp, 17 speakers, 528 watts of power and Lexicon’s unique LOGIC 7 technology.

In addition to that kind of exclusive luxury, the Genesis also offers “lots of power and smooth performance,” said the website. To put some numbers on that assessment, the Genesis’ dynamic 4.6-liter V8 makes a robust 375 hp, more than similarly engined rivals like the Lexus GS, Infiniti M and BMW 5 Series. On the other hand, “since it’s a Hyundai, it comes with a relatively affordable price; as such, this overachiever creams the competition when it comes to value.”

As for the Sonata, “this outstanding four-door has what it takes to dominate the competitive mid-size sedan segment.” That means both class-leading power and class-leading fuel economy, courtesy of an all-new, high-efficiency I4 engine and one of the very few six-speed automatic transmissions to be developed by an automaker “in house.” The “true game-changer” also was the first vehicle in its class to provide a standard Bluetooth hands-free phone system and the first popular midsizer to offer HD Radio as a factory-installed option.

Also notable: Hyundai will soon launch both a high-performance turbo-charged Sonata model—which will again top its class in terms of power (274 hp/269 lb.-ft. of torque) and fuel efficiency (34 mpg highway)—and a hybrid version that will become the first U.S. model to implement Hyundai’s proprietary Hybrid Blue Drive. This system uses lithium polymer batteries that are lighter and more efficient than the nickel-metal hydride units found in rivals like the Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry hybrids, helping the Sonata hybrid offer better highway fuel efficiency, 39 mpg, than any other mainstream hybrid competitor and better fuel efficiency in the city, 37 mpg, than all but the Fusion’s 39 mpg mark.

That’s further evidence of Hyundai’s ongoing commitment to be the auto industry’s fuel efficiency leader. In fact, the automaker led the U.S. auto industry in fuel economy in both 2008 and 2009, and remains the only company to post an average fleet fuel economy of more than 30 mpg in 2010.

It’s also a good sign that Hyundai’s new products won’t be keeping their “dark-horse” status for very much longer.

In today’s world, your ride doesn’t need to holster eight cylinders to deliver pulse-pounding road thrills, and with the right car, you don’t even need six—provided that car is the Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T. Just ask the team at Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com, which recently named the Coupe 2.0T to its 2010 Top 10 Fast-lane Fours list.

According to the KBB.com editors, the car “complements its sexy lines and impressive packaging with a bounty of straight-line quickness,” a feature that comes standard with Hyundai’s advanced 2.0-liter I4 engine. This turbocharged powerplant leverages cutting-edge technology—like dual continuously variable valve timing—to make an impressive 210 hp and 223 lb.-ft. of torque. Managing that power is a choice of two transmissions: A close-ratio six-speed manual comes standard, and drivers also can opt for an electronic six-speed automatic with Hyundai’s SHIFTRONIC paddle-shifters.

This Coupe can carve the curves, too, thanks to a thoroughly engineered, performance-oriented suspension. Up front, this hot Hyundai sports dual-link MacPherson struts with gas-filled shocks for precision steering; out back, it’s a five-link setup that’s designed to reduce wheel hop.

And that’s just the standard equipment. As KBB.com points out, R-Spec and Track models really “peg the enthusiast meter by adding a host of functional chassis/brake/wheel-and-tire upgrades to the already ultra-competent underpinnings.” In both configurations, that means bigger, 19-inch wheels and a retuned, racetrack-developed suspension to further sharpen the car’s responses; in the Track model, drivers who want to test their limits can add features like a Torsen limited-slip differential, performance stoppers from Brembo and a front-strut tower brace.

Another bonus: While ”relentlessly high fuel prices and increasingly stringent emissions requirements” are changing how automakers and customers alike look at performance, the Coupe 2.0T can achieve an EPA line of 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway/24 mpg combined and emit the same amount of CO2 as the less-powerful Honda Civic SI.

“We think our Genesis Coupe 2.0T, with its unique combination of rear-wheel drive and four-cylinder turbo power, offers an intriguing alternative to existing front-wheel drive sport coupes,” said Scott Margason, director of product planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Genesis Coupe provides a potent combination of performance and value.”

Hyundai appears to be unstopped here in the U.S. With all-new products like the Sonata and the Tucson gaining accolades and attention, sales have witnessed tremendous momentum. But one area where the Hyundai brand is still weak is back in its home market.

According to Reuters, Hyundai is still struggling in its home market and has found itself in a similar predicament that Buick has found itself in; buyers at home are bored with them, and buyers overseas can’t seem to get enough.

In South Korea, Hyundai sales have fallen three months in a row. That said, the company’s Kia brand has managed to grow thanks to the release of the all-new Optima and Sportage.

Despite the releases of the Tucson and Sonata just last fall, the Korean market is still clamoring for fresh models. Luckily, the wait won’t be long as Hyundai is preparing to launch the all-new Elantra and Accent this summer. The new Veloster-based coupe will also be arriving soon.

So, just how satisfying is the all-new 2011 Hyundai Sonata? Well, it’s so impressive that a renowned automotive consulting firm had to come up with a brand-new award just to honor it properly. Based on record-breaking consumer ratings in 48 separate measures—including comfort, convenience, performance and fuel efficiency—AutoPacific recently recognized Hyundai’s popular mid-size sedan with its very first “President’s Award.”

“Quite frankly, we were blown away by the results,” said George Peterson, who is, in fact, the president of AutoPacific. “The sheer magnitude of the 2011 Sonata’s score made recognition necessary. With a score of 775 out of 1,000, the Sonata exceeded everyone’s expectations. The Sonata’s unique styling was rated almost perfect and was a key driver to its overall superior performance in this research. Clearly, 2011 Hyundai Sonata drivers are extremely satisfied with their purchase.”

And that’s a lot of drivers, too. The Sonata sold 21,195 units in May, up 92 percent over the same month last year. That also was the third consecutive month the Sonata was the third-best-selling mid-size sedan in America on a retail basis, beating out rivals like the Ford Fusion, Nissan Altima and Chevrolet Malibu. A key factor in this performance: A unique combination of high content levels, engaging driving experience and stellar fuel economy, all at a very affordable price.

The dramatically styled Sonata offers standard features like remote start, a six-speaker sound system, an eight-way power driver’s seat and power windows/locks, along with a responsive 200 hp engine and the ability to achieve 22 mpg city/35 mpg highway, all for a starting price of just $22,595. But the Sonata is a tough package to beat regardless of potential rivals’ sticker prices.

“No vehicle has achieved a score of 775 before in our satisfaction research,” added Peterson. “The Sonata’s top score surpasses anything we have ever seen, including vehicles costing twice as much.”

Now just wait until customers see the Hyundia Sonata Turbo—offering best-in-class fuel efficiency (34 mpg highway) and performance (274 hp and 269 lb.-ft. of torque)—and the Sonata Hybrid—with estimated fuel economy numbers of 37 mpg city/39 mpg highway and a class-leading electric-only top speed of 62 mph. These two vehicles will put the current President’s Award winner up for re-election beginning later this year.

Hyundai will soon begin selling its first hybrid vehicle, the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. And while it may be late to the hybrid game, Hyundai is reportedly already planning a dedicated hybrid model.

Aiming squarely for other dedicated hybrids such as the Toyota Prius or Honda Insight, this new hybrid-electric vehicle will ride on its own platform and might also feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Models will reportedly be equipped with a lithium-polymer battery pack.

When it comes to other high-mileage vehicles, Hyundai also plans to launch a 247-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel engine for the Veracruz crossover here in the U.S. The next-generation Santa Fe will also be getting a turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine that will produce 274 horsepower.

Last but not least, Hyundai is developing a new hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, which will be ready for testing in 2012. According to Inside Line, this new model could be described as a smaller version of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class.

Hyundai’s new Sonata sedan has been an instant success, and demand at dealers across the country has not dwindled. So it seems that now is an appropriate time to expand the lineup with two more Sonatas, both of which are expected to keep consumers coming back for more.

In addition to a new turbo model, Hyundai is also introducing the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid – the company’s first hybrid model. Although official EPA estimates are not available just yet, Hyundai CEO John Krafcik has claimed that the Sonata Hybrid might reach 40 mpg highway.

“We’re working on final calibration…and the fuel economy estimates could come in a little better than before,” Krafcik said speaking to AutoblogGreen. “We said the Sonata Hybrid will have the highest fuel economy of any mid-size hybrid. We predicted 39 mpg, we may hit 40 mpg.”

Prices for the 2011 Sonata Hybrid will begin at around $26,000. Powering this model is a 2.4-liter Theta II engine producing 169 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to an electric motor that produces another 40.2 horsepower and 151.2 pound feet of torque. This powertrain is also capable of operating in electric-only mode at speeds of up to 62 mph.
