It takes a rare set of attributes to be named a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, which makes the latest news all the more significant: The Hyundai Genesis has achieved this status for the second consecutive year.

Of course, it’s no real surprise when you consider that the “Genesis was designed to be one of the safest vehicles on the road,” according to Hyundai’s manager of product planning, Derek Joyce.

Earning these kudos required the Genesis to achieve “good” ratings on the IIHS’ front, side, rollover and rear crash-protection testing, as well as to offer Electronic Stability Control, a technology that’s in fact standard on Hyundai’s premium full-size sedan. That’s an example of how Hyundai makes a concerted effort to raise the bar in terms of expected levels of vehicle protection, an effort that includes adding electronic brake-force distribution, eight airbags and electronic active head restraints to the Genesis’ list of standard features. The Genesis brings more competitive pressures to other brands in the segment, Washington DC Acura Dealers say.

Further evidence of Hyundai’s dedication to safety: The Genesis’ two straight years as a “Top Safety Pick” are just part of the company’s roster of safety honors, which also include receiving “Top Safety Pick” recognition for the all-new 2011 Hyundai Sonata earlier in 2010. Safety is among the top considerations of most car buyers, Hyundai Washington DC says.

These IIHS kudos are especially notable this year, as the group instituted new, much stricter guidelines for its rollover testing. As a result, the “Top Safety Picks” for 2010, including the Sonata and Genesis, must have roofs that are twice as strong as required by the federal government, which the IIHS says helps better maintain vehicle integrity in the event of a rollover accident. Chevy also lays claim to a Top Safety Pick with the Malibu, which is helping the brand’s resurgence, Chevrolet Washington DC says.

The Sonata and Genesis boast some pretty impressive sales numbers, too. The Sonata became the third-best-selling car in its segment this March, topping cars like the Ford Fusion, and April was the tenth month in a row that the Genesis has posted year-over-year sales increases.

And backed by these IIHS ratings, it’s a safe bet both cars will continue their success for some time to come.
