Just days ago we discussed growing speculation regarding a new Sonata coupe model in the pipeline at Hyundai. Now speculation is growing around a convertible model as well.

According to Inside Line, a Sonata convertible will allow Hyundai to target the same types of buyers that were attracted to the Chrysler Sebring, but will likely offer the quality and style that more closely resembles an Infiniti G37 Convertible.

If a convertible model does make it to showrooms, expect the same platform and powertrains of other Sonata models. However, it’s unlikely that Hyundai will offer a complex retractable hardtop, and would instead opt for a simpler fabric top.

Recently unveiled is the upcoming gas/electric hybrid Sonata, featuring a drivetrain that surely wouldn’t be offered on a potential convertible. Also, the six-speed manual offered on the base Sonata probably would not be offered either.

Regardless of the rumors, there are no confirmed reports of a Sonata convertible in development. So, if you’re eager to see one, don’t expect it anytime soon.
